Wokingham Guest House owner fined for fire safety breaches

Derrick Rands, joint owner of Wokingham Guest House, appeared before Reading Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 5 March accused of five charges under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 following inspections by Royal Berkshire Fire Authority (RBFA) between February 11 and September 16, 2013.

The fire inspection found there was inadequate fire protection provision for fire escape routes, inadequate maintenance of fire resisting doors, failure to carry out a fire risk assessment and inadequate maintenance of the emergency lighting system.

Rands admitted to five charges relating to failure to comply with an enforcement notice. He was fined £1,550 and ordered to pay £1,400 court costs plus a £50 victim surcharge.

Rands had continued to breach fire safety regulations by failing to comply with the requirements of the enforcement notice.

The continued breach of fire safety regulations had placed up 24 people at risk of death or serious injury from fire.
