Landlord fined after fire safety breaches

A landlord has been fined after being found guilty of failing to install basic safety devices at a shared house he rented out to students.

Ahmed Mushtaq appeared at Leeds Magistrates Court last week charged with multiple breaches of a house in multiple occupancy licence, the Yorkshire Evening Post reports.

Mr Mushtaq admitted he had not put an adequate fire detection system in place at the property in Headingley’s Richmond Avenue, with hand rails on staircases and fire doors also missing.

He also pleaded guilty to the accusation of failing to maintain a kitchen fire door and battery operated smoke detector.

As a result, Mr Mushtaq was fined £2,500 and told to pay costs of £2,322 plus a victim surcharge of £15.

Fines such as these can be avoided by carrying out a fire risk assessment, which helps to reduce the chances of a fire breaking out and protect people in the event of disaster.
