14 rescued as fire cuts off flats' escape route

Seven adults and a child were sent to hospital suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation following a fire at a north London shop and flats.

The whole of the staircase from the ground floor to the second floor was completely destroyed in the fire in Green Lanes, Tottenham, as was part of the ground floor shop. Fourteen people on the first floor had to be rescued by fire-fighters with ladders.

Four fire engines and around 20 fire-fighters attended the blaze.
