Our People

Sue Smith - Managing Director

Sue really has cut her teeth on the sharp end of business, and has considerable experience at dealing with the nastiest of situations, those we all really hope we never have the misfortune to be in.

After 10 years in store and area management roles, Sue went on to operate the SOS (Serious or Sensitive) out of hours hotline covering all of the Safeway store portfolio for over 8 years, Sue moved on to provide support and advice following all Government Inspector Visits for two years, prior to setting up Due Diligence Solutions.

Paul Smith MBA, FCMI, FInstLM - Business Development Director

When it comes to understanding how legal compliance can best fit within a business environment, Paul's extensive experience is invaluable.

After successfully implementing turnaround strategies in a number of Safeway superstores, and then piloting a number of wide ranging initiatives in one of the companies flagship stores, Paul was hand-picked to champion head office based roles to reduce the burden on bureaucracy. After banking annualised cost savings and efficiency improvements in excess of £10 million, and helping in a wide range of business development initiatives, Paul and his wife Sue set up Due Diligence Solutions in 2003. They were then joined shortly afterwards by fellow directors.

Paul's business acumen and credentials are second to none, having achieved an MBA in 2006, and more recently he received the highest accolades from both the Chartered Management Institute, and Institute of Leadership and Management when he was granted fellowship status.

"When it comes down to legal compliance in any organisation, the fundamental requirements for success are teamwork and keeping things simple. Our ability to recognise that no two organisations are the same, and deliver solutions in a highly cost effective way, really underlines the reason why so many of our customers love working with us," said Paul.

Chris Thompson - Operations Director

Before joining Due Diligence Solutions in 2005, Chris worked in the retail industry for over 20 years, and before leaving Safeway designed and implemented due diligence IT systems providing cost savings to the business of over £8 million. As well as implementing our in-house IT systems, Chris has been instrumental in the design of our Pyramid® online risk management system, and more recently a facilities management system.

Mitch Perry GradIFireE, MIFSM, MIAAI-UK - Fire Safety Director

With over 30 years service with the Local Authority Fire Service in Surrey, Mitch is vastly experienced. After retiring from duty, he started his own company in 2005 and specialised in fire risk assessments, on all types of properties, as well as fire investigation work. After being an associate with ourselves for a number of years, Mitch eventually became a full-time member of staff in 2008. Mitch has, this year, also been included on the Institute of Fire Safety Managers Register of Assessors.

Alan Astbury MSc, BSc(Hons), MCIEH, CMIOSH - Senior Health & Safety Consultant

Alan is both a Chartered Environmental Health Practitioner and a Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health. His 25 years experience in the health & safety field has enabled him to develop a proven track record of creating straightforward processes that help to support businesses with health & safety compliance, rather than creating administrative burdens.

Steve Johns - IT Support Assistant

Steve joined the company in 2009 as part of the expanding IT team. He holds certifications in IT Support and a range of computer related technologies. He has experience in the building services and manufacturing industries and in his own time he enjoys web development, fishing and rugby.

Steve Buchan - Health & Safety Consultant

Steve joined the team in 2010 as a Health & Safety Consultant. He has completed 22 years service in the Army, where his last job was Health and Safety advisor for his unit. Steve now manages our SME's and is responsible for our in house 'open' courses at Brenchley House.

Wes Boulstridge - Fire Safety Consultant

Wes joined the team in 2011 as a Fire Safety Consultant. As our client base and business in Scotland has grown significantly, Wes has come on-board to ensure that we provide a first class service to all of our clients north of the border, undertaking the role of a fire safety consultant and a fire risk assessor. With considerable experience in this area, after completing 19 years' service in the Local Authority Fire Service in both operational roles and that of a Fire Safety Enforcement Officer, Wes is a very welcome addition to the team.

Alan Duncan - Business Development Co-Ordinator

Alan joins the team with a track record of successfully managing multi-technology IT projects nationally. Prior to DDS, Alan comes from an IT service and system integration company, specialising in rapid deployment of IT across a wide and varied selection of sectors and businesses, utilising internal and third party teams installing printers and multi-functional devices into several large blue chip companies covering retail, manufacturing, law firms and government sectors. Alan also has a wealth of knowledge managing projects using Prince2 methodology or similar depending on the client, and adherence to company or client ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 practices.
